These pieces stem from the overlap between my artist and mother lives. They are a dialogue between the two, started in the space of a residency project I did through the Artist/Mother Network in February & March of 2022.
Compelled by the tension between mothering young children and retreating into the studio to create my “serious” work, for one month I intensively integrated mark-making into parenting life, with the goal of enriching both roles. The process and its resulting compositions informed these works.
After the residency was over, I tore apart several of the larger drawings and pieced them back together as small collages. I found the fragmented nature of working in collage extremely well-suited to the fragmented time and attention of an artist who is also a mother and a teacher.
Mothering often feels like equal parts chaos, intimacy, adventure, and beauty. I think these pieces, with their nature-inspired forms and textures, reflect some of that wild balance. They are a dialogue between my daughters and my practice, and a path toward creative survival in this season.
